Intro Continued

When Kiera finally opened her eyes the searing sunlight that greeted them was like a breath of fresh air and she inhaled deeply.

'Well its about fuckin time" Ember snorted from her left side.

Kiera turned her head to see Ember lounging in a hammock, a drink in one hand and a book in the other. Ember didn't bother looking up for her book as she took a drink and flipped the page. Kiera found that she was laying on soft grass in an field with a few small evergreens. Her body felt comfortably warm so she assumed she must have been asleep for a while under the afternoon sun. Pushing herself up with her hands she got a better look around. The grassy field disappeared into a dense ascending tree line that climbed a mountainous slope. She looked behind her and caught sight of a sleek looking nearly all glass two story house with a gravel driveway snaking into the tree line. The house, while clearly expensive, oddly didn't seem out of place in the woods. Light gleamed off all of the windows and a mirror like effect mimicked the trees around it. It was as if she was in a warm oasis in the middle of a sea of trees. Even the ground beneath her seems to radiate with an abnormal heat as she pressed her hands firmly into the ground.

"Hot spot," Ember said simply, and Kiera turned her gaze back to see Ember studying her. "The fact that you can sense it means your not a total loss I suppose," she added.

Kiera stared in confusion for a minute, hot spot? Then a foggy moment came back to her, an intense heat in Ember's eyes in the car, You're a Dragon, and then blackness.

"I'm a Dragon..." Kiera said slowly, and felt a surge of warmth in her chest as the words left her tongue. She couldn't explain it but as she said them she knew they were true. She'd always had a good sense for truth from lies and this one she knew was true.

"Say it again" Ember said.

"I am a Dragon" Kiera repeated, the warmth grew more intense.

"Yes, a Dragon,"  Ember said arching a perfectly auburn eyebrow. "Now control it," she commanded staring at Kiera intently. "Feel your fire, grasp it, and then push it back down until you just barely feel it flickering in your chest."  Kiera could tell Ember wasn't playing around and expected her to comply.  Kiera tried to 'feel her fire' but thinking about the heat that had bloomed in her chest only seemed to make it hotter and spread.

"I said control it dammit," Ember snapped. The heat was in her arms and traveling up her neck.

"I'm trying..." Kiera gritted out frustrated. She didn't like being ordered around and she felt like she was in an internal battle with this spreading fire. A battle she was losing. She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to focus. She could just barely make out the edges of the heat that was spreading and tried to imagine backing it off like water receding from a shore line. It didn't recede but it seemed to stop spreading at least.

"And how long do you think you can keep that up," Ember's condescending voice came from immediately above her indicating she was standing directly above her. Kiera could feel Ember almost as if she was inside and could see the tide Kiera was trying to hold back and Ember was right, she felt her energy seeping away quickly as she tried to stop the fire.

"Pathetic," Ember spat "a child could do it. Now Fuck Ing Con Trol It Kiera." Kiera's anger seemed to fuel the fire but also her strength as she grabbed it and held tight.

"Fuck...Off" Kiera growled back, she squeezed the fire within tighter and it burned brighter but began condensing back into her chest. Fuck Off, fuck off, fuck off she continued to rage in her mind.

Control your fire and make me, or are you too weak?, Ember's thoughts pushed back at Kiera's mind taunting her. With a final grasp she closed the fist inside her locking the fire in its cage as she fell back onto the grasp, breathing heavily and exhausted.

"Not bad for a toddler," Ember's scoffed as she turned and began sauntering to the house, "oh and if you pass out again don't think I am going to carry your ass inside."

"Go fuck yourself," Kiera retorted as she caught her breath.

"Your going to have to do better than that baby doll," Ember tossed over her shoulder. Kiera rolled her eyes and finally noticed that while it didn't seem that long, in her struggle with her fire the sun had fallen away and the moon was beginning to claim the sky. She lay there almost willing herself to wake up from this insane dream, but she knew that this felt more real than anything he had ever felt before.
